In this tutorial we will create a Count Total Rows using PHP. This code will display the total rows in the table. The code use MySQLi SELECT query to display the data from the databasse, then by the use of mysqli_num_rows() a php mysqli bult-in function that will display the total rows of a table when the query is set. This a user-friendly program feel free to modify and use it to your system.

We will be using PHP as a scripting language that interepret in the webserver such as xamp, wamp, etc. It is widely use by modern website application to handle and protect user confidential information.

Getting Started:

First you have to download & install XAMPP or any local server that run PHP scripts. Here's the link for XAMPP server

And, this is the link for the bootstrap that i used for the layout design

Creating Database

Open your database web server then create a database name in it db_rows, after that click Import then locate the database file inside the folder of the application then click ok.

Creating the database connection

Open your any kind of text editor(notepad++, etc..). Then just copy/paste the code below then name it conn.php.

  1. <?php
  2. $conn=mysqli_connect("localhost", "root", "", "db_rows");
  4. if(!$conn){
  5. die("Error: Faile to connect to database!");
  6. }
  7. ?>

Creating The Interface

This is where we will create a simple form for our application. To create the forms simply copy and write it into your text editor, then save it as index.php.

  1. <!DOCTYPE html>
  2. <html lang="en">
  3. <head>
  4. <meta charset="UTF-8" name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"/>
  5. <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/bootstrap.css"/>
  6. </head>
  7. <body>
  8. <nav class="navbar navbar-default">
  9. <div class="containr-fluid">
  10. <a class="navbar-brand" href="<a href="">Sourcecodester</a>
  11. " rel="nofollow">">Sourcecodester</a>
  12. </a> </div>
  13. </nav>
  14. <div class="col-md-3"></div>
  15. <div class="col-md-6 well">
  16. <h3 class="text-primary">PHP - Count Total Rows Source Code</h3>
  17. <hr style="border-top:1px dotted #ccc;"/>
  18. <div class="col-md-4">
  19. <form method="POST" action="add_member.php">
  20. <div class="form-group">
  21. <label>Firstname</label>
  22. <input type="text" name="firstname" class="form-control" required="required"/>
  23. </div>
  24. <div class="form-group">
  25. <label>Lastname</label>
  26. <input type="text" name="lastname" class="form-control" required="required"/>
  27. </div>
  28. <div class="form-group">
  29. <label>Address</label>
  30. <input type="text" name="address" class="form-control" required="required"/>
  31. </div>
  32. <center><button class="btn btn-primary" name="add">Add Member</button></center>
  33. </form>
  34. </div>
  35. <div class="col-md-8">
  36. <?php include"count_rows.php";?>
  37. <br />
  38. <table class="table table-bordered">
  39. <thead class="alert-info">
  40. <tr>
  41. <th>Firstname</th>
  42. <th>Lastname</th>
  43. <th>Address</th>
  44. </tr>
  45. </thead>
  46. <tbody>
  47. <?php
  48. require_once 'conn.php';
  49. $query = mysqli_query($conn, "SELECT * FROM `member`") or die(mysqli_error());
  50. while($fetch = mysqli_fetch_array($query)){
  51. ?>
  52. <tr>
  53. <td><?php echo $fetch['firstname']?></td>
  54. <td><?php echo $fetch['lastname']?></td>
  55. <td><?php echo $fetch['address']?></td>
  56. </tr>
  57. <?php
  58. }
  59. ?>
  61. </tbody>
  62. </table>
  63. </div>
  64. </div>
  65. </body>
  66. </html>

Creating the PHP Query

This code contains the php query of the application. This code will store the form inputs to the database server. To make this just copy and write these block of codes below inside the text editor, then save it as add_member.php.

  1. <?php
  2. require_once 'conn.php';
  4. if(ISSET($_POST['add'])){
  5. $firstname = $_POST['firstname'];
  6. $lastname = $_POST['lastname'];
  7. $address = $_POST['address'];
  9. mysqli_query($conn, "INSERT INTO `member` VALUES('', '$firstname', '$lastname', '$address')") or die(mysqli_error());
  11. header("location: index.php");
  12. }
  13. ?>

Creating the Main Function

This code contains the main function of the application. This code will display the total rows of the database table. To make this just copy and write these block of codes below inside the text editor, then save it as count_rows.php.

  1. <div class="form-inline">
  2. <label>Num of rows: </label>
  3. <?php
  4. require_once'conn.php';
  5. $query=mysqli_query($conn, "SELECT * FROM `member`") or die(mysqli_error());
  6. $rows=mysqli_num_rows($query);
  8. echo '<input type="text" name="rows" class="form-control" size="4" value="'.$rows.'" disabled="disabled"/>';
  9. ?>
  10. </div>

There you have it we successfully created Count Total Rows using PHP. I hope that this simple tutorial help you to what you are looking for. For more updates and tutorials just kindly visit this site. Enjoy Coding!
