In this tutorial we will create a Simple Change File Name using PHP. This code will launch a modal to update a filename when the user click the update button. The code use MySQLi UPDATE query to update the new information in the database base on the given file id, and also change the file itself using rename() a php built-in function that rename the existing file in the local file server by providing the old filename and new filename. This a user-friendly program feel free to modify and use it to your system.

We will be using PHP as a scripting language that interepret in the webserver such as xamp, wamp, etc. It is widely use by modern website application to handle and protect user confidential information.

Getting Started:

First you have to download & install XAMPP or any local server that run PHP scripts. Here's the link for XAMPP server https://www.apachefriends.org/index.html.

And this is the link for the jquery that i used in this tutorial https://jquery.com/.

Lastly, this is the link for the bootstrap that i used for the layout design https://getbootstrap.com/.

Creating Database

Open your database web server then create a database name in it db_change_file, after that click Import then locate the database file inside the folder of the application then click ok.

Creating the database connection

Open your any kind of text editor(notepad++, etc..). Then just copy/paste the code below then name it conn.php.

  1. <?php
  2. $conn = new mysqli('localhost', 'root', '', 'db_change_file');
  3.
  4. if(!$conn){
  5. die("Error: Failed to connect to database");
  6. }
  7. ?>

Creating The Interface

This is where we will create a simple form for our application. To create the forms simply copy and write it into your text editor, then save it as index.php.

  1. <!DOCTYPE html>
  2. <html lang="en">
  3. <head>
  4. <meta charset="UTF-8" name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"/>
  5. <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/bootstrap.css"/>
  6. </head>
  7. <body>
  8. <nav class="navbar navbar-default">
  9. <div class="container-fluid">
  10. <a class="navbar-brand" href="<a href="https://sourcecodester.com">Sourcecodester</a>
  11. " rel="nofollow">https://sourcecodester.com">Sourcecodester</a>
  12. </a> </div>
  13. </nav>
  14. <div class="col-md-3"></div>
  15. <div class="col-md-6 well">
  16. <h3 class="text-primary">PHP - Simple Change File Name</h3>
  17. <hr style="border-top:1px dotted #000;"/>
  18. <div class="col-md-4">
  19. <form method="POST" action="upload.php" enctype="multipart/form-data">
  20. <div class="form-group">
  21. <input name="file" type="file" required="required"/>
  22. </div>
  23. <center><button class="btn btn-primary" name="upload"><span class="glyphicon glyphicon-upload"></span> Upload</button></center>
  24. </form>
  25. </div>
  26. <div class="col-md-8">
  27. <table class="table table-bordered">
  28. <thead class="alert-info">
  29. <tr>
  30. <th>File Name</th>
  31. <th>File Location</th>
  32. <th>Action</th>
  33. </tr>
  34. <thead>
  35. <tbody>
  36. <?php
  37. require 'conn.php';
  38. $query=mysqli_query($conn, "SELECT * FROM `file`") or die(mysqli_error());
  39. while($fetch=mysqli_fetch_array($query)){
  40. ?>
  41. <tr>
  42. <td><?php echo $fetch['filename']?></td>
  43. <td><?php echo $fetch['location']?></td>
  44. <td><button type="button" class="btn btn-warning" data-toggle="modal" data-target="#edit<?php echo $fetch['file_id']?>"><span class="glyphicon glyphicon-edit"></span> Edit</button></td>
  45. </tr>
  46.
  47.
  48. <div class="modal fade" id="edit<?php echo $fetch['file_id']?>" aria-hidden="true">
  49. <div class="modal-dialog">
  50. <div class="modal-content">
  51. <form method="POST" enctype="multipart/form-data" action="change.php">
  52. <div class="modal-header">
  53. <h3 class="modal-title">Update File</h3>
  54. </div>
  55. <div class="modal-body">
  56. <div class="col-md-2"></div>
  57. <div class="col-md-8">
  58. <input type="hidden" value="<?php echo $fetch['file_id']?>" name="file_id"/>
  59. <input type="hidden" name="location" value="<?php echo $fetch['location']?>"/>
  60. <div class="form-group">
  61. <label>Filename</label>
  62. <input name="filename" class="form-control" type="text" value="<?php echo $fetch['filename']?>" required="required"/>
  63. </div>
  64. </div>
  65. </div>
  66. <br style="clear:both;"/>
  67. <div class="modal-footer">
  68. <button class="btn btn-danger" data-dismiss="modal"><span class="glyphicon glyphicon-remove"></span> Close</button>
  69. <button class="btn btn-warning" name="edit"><span class="glyphicon glyphicon-save"></span> Update</button>
  70. </div>
  71. </form>
  72. </div>
  73. </div>
  74. </div>
  75. <?php
  76. }
  77.
  78. ?>
  79. </tbody>
  80. </table>
  81. </div>
  82. </div>
  83. <script src="js/jquery-3.2.1.min.js"></script>
  84. <script src="js/bootstrap.js"></script>
  85. </body>
  86. </html>

Creating Upload Query

This code contains the upload query of the application. This code will upload the file information to the MySQLi database server. To do that just copy and write this block of codes inside the text editor, then save it as upload.php.

  1. <?php
  2. require_once 'conn.php';
  3.
  4. if(ISSET($_POST['upload'])){
  5. $file_name = $_FILES['file']['name'];
  6. $file_temp = $_FILES['file']['tmp_name'];
  7. $file_size = $_FILES['file']['size'];
  8.
  9. $exp = explode(".", $file_name);
  10. $ext = end($exp);
  11. $file = time();
  12. $location = "uploads/".$file.".".$ext;
  13.
  14. if($file_size < 5242880){
  15. move_uploaded_file($file_temp, $location);
  16. mysqli_query($conn, "INSERT INTO `file` VALUES('', '$file', '$location')") or die(mysqli_error());
  17. echo "<script>alert('Successfully uploaded!')</script>";
  18. echo "<script>window.location='index.php'</script>";
  19. }else{
  20. echo "<script>alert('File too large too upload!')</script>";
  21. echo "<script>window.location='index.php'</script>";
  22. }
  23. }
  24. ?>

Creating the Main Function

This code contains the main function of the application. This code will change the filename when the button is clicked. To make this just copy and write these block of codes below inside the text editor, then save it as change.php

  1. <?php
  2. require_once 'conn.php';
  3.
  4. if(ISSET($_POST['edit'])){
  5. $name=$_POST['filename'];
  6. $location=$_POST['location'];
  7. $file_id=$_POST['file_id'];
  8. $exp=explode("/", $location);
  9. $ext=explode(".", $exp[1]);
  10.
  11.
  12. if(file_exists($location)){
  13. if(rename($exp[0]."/".$exp[1], $exp[0]."/".$name.".".$ext[1])){
  14. $filename=$name;
  15. $path=$exp[0]."/".$name.".".$ext[1];
  16. mysqli_query($conn, "UPDATE `file` SET `filename`='$filename', `location`='$path' WHERE `file_id`='$file_id'") or die(mysqli_error());
  17.
  18. echo"<script>alert('Successfully change filename!')</script>";
  19. echo"<script>window.location='index.php'</script>";
  20. }
  21. }else{
  22. echo"<script>alert('File Not Exist!')</script>";
  23. echo"<script>window.location='index.php'</script>";
  24. }
  25. }
  26.
  27.
  28. ?>
